On the Outside: Stereotyping In Mono
Installation (2008) : Audio and photography booklet (plastic, metal, paper, electronics components)
"January 2007, I was on my way back from the annual vacation in the UK. This time, I could not be able to hand-carry my camera, I was forced to check it in with another luggage of mine. The object that used to be allowed to travel everywhere is now forbidden to be on board with me. After couple of minutes arguing with the security officers, I had to surrender to their power otherwise, I could not fly back to Sweden. ‘Here is a broken camera – the consequence I had from that conversation with the authority’.
Because of the threat of terrorism, airport security and their restriction have escalated to a high level. To prevent and eliminate terrorist attacks, the custom and security officers are fully authorised to question, inspect and detain whoever they suspect to be harmful to national security. Trapped in our own fear of terror, the anticipation blinds us to comply with this ludicrous affair. In the world we are eager for equality, how does this security restriction make discrimination justified?”
Nedine Kachornnamsong, June 2007
'Stereotyping in Mono' is a representation of a foreseen experience – a prototype of the augmented memoir. A sequence of photographs taken with the broken camera is shown along with an audio recording from the Kviberg market (locally known as an immigrant market) in Gothenburg. The work reflects me on a stereotypical looking glass. ‘Hear upon me, look upon me; I am illustrating the prospective memory. Closing nostalgia between the lines for being unjust, there is a repetitive riddle to measure the measurement of being equitable.’
