Washroom-Notice

Washroom-Notice
Site-specific Installation (2006) : Papers, pencils, stickers and nylon threads

Washroom-Notice is a site-specific project conducted at Copenhagen Airport, Kastrup, Denmark. It took place in a Critical Security Restricted Area (CSRA), commonly known as a transit area. In this project, I had spent one week to observe and done a bit of (quick and dirty) ethnography.

The posters were placed on an inside of the toilets in both women s and men room of terminal 2-3. Each poster attached with a small pencil for the people to write and reply to each other.

An issue I need to address here is the controversy setting of this piece, as a toilet area is the most forbidden space in terms of culture. The reason to select the setting in toilet is not about approaching people in the explicit way but its correspondence with airport context. From the observations, passengers are very reserved in the transit area because of awareness that they might be observed by other passengers or security system. Therefore, the closed atmosphere of the washroom, personal and privacy of toilet is expected to give people confidence in participation as well as freedom for expression.

These posters were divided into 3 themes:

I Wish, I Could : What is your destination and where is the place you wish you could be?
The poster contains a world map with 2 sets of stickers for the passengers to stick on their destination and the place they wish they could be.

Tips & Tricks for Travellers : Grab the pencil and write down what you wanna share with other travellers.

The Missing Piece : Is there anything you wanna add or wish to be there in this picture?
